About Us

Our History

Nebula is an Educational Institute that has grown from intense and comprehensive engagement in training professionals over half a century.   It was first known as the Sri Lanka Telecom Training Centre, set up as the training arm of Sri Lanka Telecom PLC with a mandate to develop the company’s human resources. It played a key role in the company becoming the premier integrated communications service provider and the leading broadband and backbone infrastructure services provider in the country.

It all began in 1973 with the establishment of a Training Centre in Moratuwa, followed by the setting up of a similar facility ten years later in Peradeniya and another in 1988 in Welisara, the last emerging as the flagship training facility of the company.

In 2004 Sri Lanka Telecom Training Centre launched its services to the external parties through collaboration with City & Guilds. In the following year, 2005, the Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronics was launched. In 2006, students who successfully completed their Pearson BTEC HND in Electrical and Electronics at SLTTC were given the opportunity to complete their degree in Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire, UK by enrolling in the final year of the degree programme.

In addition to these, Nebula is a TVEC (Tertiary & Vocational Education Commission) approved and Authorized one and only training centre in the country for offering a pathway to obtain NVQ Level 6 equivalence for BTEC Level 5 HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. It also serves as system administrator and system defender for the REDHAT Academy and is the certified network defender of the EC Council.

The scope of training therefore has been widened over the years to serve a larger group including professionals, employees of private and public sectors, and the general public, with increasing demand for knowledge in the relevant sectors necessitating a comprehensive upgrade to a degree- offering educational institution. Nebula, then, was a logical product of an expanding economy, technological advancement and the increasing importance of enhancing Sri Lanka’s knowledge economy.

Nebula is unique in that the Education Institute offers students an academic overview, specialisation in selected fields and practical training. This is why many undergraduates reading for degrees in engineering from premier state-run higher education institutions seek enrolment at Nebula in order to complement their academic pursuits with practical industrial training.  Indeed, one of the most significant endorsements of the quality of instruction is the fact that industry competitors send their employees to Nebula to obtain or hone relevant skills. It is also gratifying that students graduating from Nebula find employment with companies in competition with Sri Lanka Telecom.
